Villa Frère

The Villa Frere story began in 1821 when Rt. Hon. John Hookham Frere, English scholar, politician, poet and diplomat, settles in Malta with his ailing wife, Lady Elizabeth Countess Dowager of Errol, and his sister Susanna. After a first year in Valletta, Frere signed a 99-year lease with the nuns of St. Catherine’s for a seafront property in Pieta, which later became Villa Frere and its extensive gardens.
