Catacombs of Ta’ Bistra

The Ta’ Bistra catacombs, located between the ancient town of Melite and the port of Salina, are the largest group of tombs and catacombs outside the island’s ancient city limits. Their existence was first documented in the late 1800s, but they were not thoroughly studied until 1933 by Captain Charles Zammit. Part of the site was later covered by a new road leading to Burmarrad. Further studies took place in 2004, 2013 and 2014, bringing new discoveries and challenging previous interpretations of the site.
