Description
The fascinating story of Villa Frere began when Rt. Hon. John Hookham Frere, a renowned English scholar, politician, poet and diplomat, retired to Malta accompanied by his ailing wife, Lady Elizabeth Dowager Countess of Errol and her sister Susanna in 1821. They first resided in Valletta but a year later Frere took a 99-year lease from the nuns of St. Catherine’s of a waterfront property in Pieta that later became Villa Frere and its extensive gardens.
